Art theft

I wasn’t going to do this. I promised myself I’d stop getting mad at this situation. I knew since the moment I started uploading stuff that this would be unavoidable. It is the fucking internet after all… you kinda know you don’t own shit you post here anymore. Everyone feels safe behind a crappy unoriginal username, hiding their true identity just to think of themselves as smart badass people.

However, I realized I’m in all my fucking right to be mad. I’m not opposed to the idea of my art being shared all over the net, no… I don’t care about sharing it, you can spam it wherever you like if you want. I have no problem with that.
What I DO have a DAMN FUCKING problem with is when people share the stuff, BLURRED AND IN LOW QUALITY to “erase” the signature as much as they can. Even directly cropping it off and THEY DON’T PUT THE LINK TO THE SOURCE.

Like, seriously? You dont know who the artist is? DO SOME RESEARCH. Google is a very useful tool to do exactly THAT. You took the art from SOMEWHERE, it just didn’t upload itself to your instagram/twitter/facebook/tumblr whatever the fuck you’re using.

We, the people that make fanart, we do it because we love what we do. We don’t get paid for that. We all have our own jobs and lives. We find a way to make art to share with the rest of the people and it takes EFFORT and TIME to do so.
I didn’t spent 34 hours of work in a piece and going to bed at 4am when I had to get up to go work the next day, just to see it shared without the link to my profile. I don’t ask for money or anything really complicated, pal… I just ask that you recognize I WAS THE ONE who through blood, sweat and tears, made it.

Now, I’m talking about my personal situation. I have two jobs just to survive and I also go to college. I live in south america, where things are not as easy as it is in other parts of the world. I’m not trying to victimize myself by all means, I know of course that there are people have it even harder than me. I see them every day… but I also need to stat a point with this.
I started to make fanart with a tablet that I borrowed from my office, a wacom bamboo small size. Simple, and used. It never worked too well, but I managed. I managed because really wanted to do it. I dont own a great PC either. I made all my stuff, renders, drawings and such, with a 5 year old intel I3 and an ATI Radeon HD 5670.

Sometimes I felt like I really couldn’t do anything with it. With my life, too. Art is the only thing I know how to do and I’m not even “great” at it. I just work my ass off. I almost rage quit, several times… yet I came back to do this because art is really what I love to do. Like I said before, in all honesty, it is the only thing I know how to do.
So, excuse me if I get mad when I see one of my drawings out there, gathering likes and shares without my name in it – or even worse – with my name ripped off like it was garbage.

I don’t ask anything more than copy and paste the link of the source. That only takes a few seconds. Thats all.

Because to be honest? The only thing I really have is my name… I only ask for a damn pat on the back when I do something right.

So the next time you share a fanart or an artwork, the next time you follow and like something without the source, the next time the person who uploads it has the guts to only say “credit to the artist” without the source in the post… Please think twice. Think about the artist behind the drawing, render, or fanfiction you liked so much.

A pat on the back is not much. And thats all we want.

Here? I’m the punk queen of Arcadia Bay, of course.
In real life, I’m an artist, gamer, crappy musician, game dev and a wannabe writer. Oh, and I’m always running late. MaiQueti in a nutshell.
